Horse Brushes (and why we need them)

How many brushes does it take to make your pony clean…? TOO MANY!! HAHAHA! 😂 Coco started off really dusty, muddy and overall quite dirty from turn out, and now look at him: so nice and clean. ✨🤎🫧 How did I do it? With the help of several brushes described below.

So many brushes, each with their own job. Starting from the bottom row on the left:

Pink flick brush: This brush is used to flick the dirt or dust from your horse’s coat. I normally start brushing Coco with this one.

Cotton candy-dandy brush: A dandy brush has stiff bristles in order to get all the lumps of dirt off your horse.

Blue finishing brush: I use this one for getting the last little bits of dirt off Coco’s coat. I don’t know how it works so well, but I swear he’s shiny after I use this one. ✨

White face brush: Face brushes are normally soft but they still get LOTS of dirt and dust from your horse’s face. Coco does not like this part- he’s sensitive to anything near his face and gets wide-eyed right away!

Rainbow main & tail brush: A main & tail brush is exactly what it sounds like. Coco’s tail is so tangled sometimes that I have to use ShowSheen to detangle and condition it just to brush it! (Yay, ShowSheen, my pony would hardly be clean if you didn’t exist!) ❤️🤎

Black and blue hoof pick: A hoof pick is used for getting rocks and dirt out of your horse’s hoof. You may be asking: how do you pick a hoof?
Step 1: Stand next to your horse’s leg and gently ask them to pick up their hoof while you hold that leg and help.
Step 2: When you have your horse’s hoof in your hand, though the outer edge is where the shoe would be, the inner area can get packed with dirt and rocks- your horse needs your assistance here. So, scrape out the dirt and rocks with your hoof pick. Your horse thanks you.

I should have a pic of a curry comb above, which deeply removes dust and dirt when you clean their coat in circular motions. I seem to have lost mine, so now I just use all my friends’ curry combs, hahaha. 😆
